EMERGING MARKETS-Renewed trade hopes lift Latam stocks, Chile rate decision eyed

· December 4, 2019 ·

(Updates prices) * U.S. and China move closer to phase-one trade deal - Bloomberg * Brazil shares at record high * Fitch says technical recession likely in Chile * Argentine central bank chief tenders resignation By Ambar Warrick and Susan Mathew Dec 4 (Reuters) - Most Latin American stock markets staged a strong comeback on Wednesday, with Brazil shares scaling an all-time high, as U.S. President Donald Trump voiced more optimism than he did a day earlier about trade talks with China. After flagging a possible delay in reaching a deal with China on Tuesday, Trump earlier in the day said trade talks were going "very well." This followed a Bloomberg report that said both sides were closer to agreeing on the amount of tariffs that would be rolled back in a phase one trade deal. A basket of Latin American stocks jumped 1.3%, in line with a world-wide pick up in stocks. Brazil shares rose 1% with financials and energy stocks in the lead. EMERGING MARKETS-Latam FX firm; Petrobras rally takes Bovespa to new highs

· December 5, 2019 ·

* Petrobras rises 2%, says may divest billions more than forecast * Chile stocks, peso rise; central bank holds benchmark rate * Argentine c. bank chief resigns as new govt takes office By Susan Mathew Dec 5 (Reuters) - Brazil's real and Chile's peso touched two-week peaks to lead Latin American currencies higher on Thursday as they capitalized on the dollar's weakness, while a rally in stocks saw Brazil shares scale new highs. Stocks took support from lingering optimism over the Sino-U.S. trade war, after a Bloomberg report as well as positive comments from U.S. President Donald Trump brewed some hope over a "phase-one" trade deal. Regional markets have also been propped up by some positive economic readings this week, with better-than-expected GDP data from Brazil, Latin America's largest economy, being the most notable. Brazilian stocks extended Wednesday's gains to touch a fresh record high, boosted by shares of state oil firm Petroleo Brasileiro SA. EMERGING MARKETS-Latam stocks dip on trade woes; Brazil FX firms on strong Q3 GDP

· December 3, 2019 ·

(Updates prices, adds asset manager's comment) * Brazil real surges after better-than-expected GDP * Traders cautious after Trump says no trade deal deadline * Latam is poised for economic growth - asset manager By Ambar Warrick and Susan Mathew Dec 3 (Reuters) - Latin American stock markets fell on Tuesday, with Mexican shares touching a two-month low, as comments by U.S. President Donald Trump sparked fears of a delay in resolving the Sino-U.S. trade war. Global equities dropped after Trump said a trade deal with China might be delayed until after the November 2020 U.S. presidential election. Possible U.S. duties on French goods also kept markets on edge. Investors had earlier expected an interim trade deal between Washington and Beijing by mid-November, but the prospect of a delayed conclusion now opens the door to a further escalation in the tensions that have dogged risk assets for more than a year. Tuesday's comments come after Trump restored metal tariffs on Brazil and Argentina … [Read more...] about EMERGING MARKETS-Latam stocks dip on trade woes; Brazil FX firms on strong Q3 GDP

Housing market is hit by the ‘ScoMo effect’ with the property price downturn FINALLY expected to end following the PM’s election victory

· May 29, 2019 ·

House prices are on the rise again after Scott Morrison's shock election victory erased fears of negative gearing restrictions. Median property prices rose 0.3 per cent in Sydney and 0.1 per cent in Melbourne in the week since the ballot after falls of 10 per cent this year. Buyers are flocking back to the market with the Commonwealth Bank saying it had the most home loan applications in 10 months last week. Scott Morrison promised no changes to negative gearing or capital gains discounts, which Labor promised to slash, so house prices are expected to rise Across the country, median prices fell 0.5 per cent in April with experts expecting that to level off and start rising again by July. Macquarie Bank attributed this to the election result, expected interest rate cuts, and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority loosening loan restrictions. Study suggesting human life originates in Botswana expected to catalyze its travel market

· December 6, 2019 ·

Video PlayerClose GABORONE, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A recent study tracing the origins of modern human life to Botswana is expected to serve as a springboard to the phenomenal growth of the southern African country's travel market, a Botswanan tourism officer said Thursday. Based on the genetics, the report, carried by the prestigious science journal Nature on Oct. 28, suggests that human life started around the dry and salty flats of the Makgadikgadi Basin, known as Makgadikgadi Pans, an area situated some 400 km north of the country's capital Gaborone. "Botswana can therefore proudly claim and ride on the recognition bestowed on her that human life originated in our country," said Myra Sekgororoane, Botswana Tourism Organization's chief executive officer, when answering a questionnaire from Xinhua. An increase in the number of visitors can be expected since the Makgadikgadi Pans has been a choice of tourist destination on its own, she said. "Okavango and Makgadikgadi Pans were … [Read more...] about Study suggesting human life originates in Botswana expected to catalyze its travel market
