MILAN: The Alpine skiing World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo will take place in February 2021 as originally scheduled, the International Ski Federation (FIS) said on Thursday. In May the Italian winter sports federation (FISI) had asked to postpone the event by a year due to uncertainties linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative impact on the country. "It was clear that there was a strong desire to carry out the event in 2021... FISI expressed to the FIS Council the importance of these World Championships to be staged in 2021 as a positive signal for the entire country," FIS said in a statement. FISI said FIS had decided to provide a financial guarantee of up to 10 million Swiss francs (8.49 million pounds) to Italy should there be a new outbreak of novel coronavirus, the federation said in an online statement. "It is a form of guarantee that the federation wanted to give to Italy, hoping that there is no need and that the World Championship will go ahead … [Read more...] about Alpine skiing: World Championships in Italy confirmed for 2021

Italy says 28 migrants test positive for COVID-19 on quarantine ship
ROME: Dozens of migrants rescued in the Mediterranean have tested positive for the new coronavirus while held in a quarantine ship off the southern Italian coast, Sicily's regional leader Nello Musumeci said on Wednesday (Jun 24). In April Italy banned migrant rescue ships from docking in its ports until Jul 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It now transfers all those saved at sea onto large ferries which must wait off its coast. After saving more than 200 people stranded at sea last week, the Sea-Watch 3 charity boat arrived on Sunday in the Sicilian town of Porto Empedocle. The mainly African passengers were immediately moved to the Italian ferry Moby Zaza, where 28 of them, or 13per cent, tested positive. "In April we asked the central government to place the migrants under quarantine to prevent infections.. Those who accused us of racism will now realise that we were right," Musumeci said on Facebook. Official data suggests Africa has been less badly affected by COVID-19 … [Read more...] about Italy says 28 migrants test positive for COVID-19 on quarantine ship
Italy approves guarantees for US$7.1 billion loan to Fiat Chrysler: source
ROME: Italy has approved a decree offering state guarantees for a 6.3-billion euro (US$7.1 billion) loan to Fiat Chrysler's (FCA) Italian unit, a source said, paving the way for the largest crisis loan to a European carmaker. The source said Italy's audit court had signed off on the decree, in a final step of what had been a lengthy and contested process to get the loan approved. The court's approval follows an earlier endorsement by the economy ministry. "The audit court authorized the decree," said a source close to the matter, asking not to be named because of its sensitivity. FCA's Italian division has tapped Rome's COVID-19 emergency financing schemes to secure a state-backed, three-year facility to help the group's operations in the country, as well as Italy's car sector in which about 10,000 businesses operate, weather the crisis triggered by the coronavirus emergency. The loan will be disbursed by Italy's biggest retail bank Intesa Sanpaolo , which has already … [Read more...] about Italy approves guarantees for US$7.1 billion loan to Fiat Chrysler: source
