SINGAPORE: Mayor of North East District and Minister of State for Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck has met with grassroots leaders of Punggol East SMC to find out more about the needs of residents. He has been tasked with overseeing the single-seat constituency after Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer's shock resignation on Wednesday. Mr Teo shared his immediate priorities with Channel NewsAsia. Even as news of Mr Michael Palmer's resignation starts to sink in, the focus has shifted to ensuring there is a smooth handover of duties. Mr Teo said his priority is to make sure the needs of residents in Punggol East SMC continue to be met. Raising awareness about dementia among elderly Malays
SINGAPORE: The prevalence of dementia among Malays aged 60 years and above is higher than the population prevalence of 5.2 per cent. And it is the highest among the major ethnic communities. It is estimated that about 28,000 seniors aged 60 and above live with dementia in Singapore currently, and this number is expected to increase to 50,000 by 2020. A survey conducted by HPB revealed that the awareness level of the signs of dementia is relatively lower among the Malay residents in comparison to others. So to raise awareness of the importance of mental well-being and reduce the risk of dementia among the Malay community, HPB is working with mosques and the Geylang Serai Community Club (CC) to launch the Malay version of its popular Nurture Your Mind programme. It is the hunting grounds of up to 900 reef sharks, including grey reef, whitetip reef, silvertip, and blacktip reef sharks. Researchers studying this nearly pristine ecosystem recently documented a new phenomenon during their nighttime dives: The sharks hunt in packs. They do not cooperate with one another or share the prey; the first shark to catch the fish gets to eat it. It’s more of an opportunistic relationship between two shark species, the grey reef and the whitetip reef shark. The grey shark appears to exploit the assets of the whitetip to increase its predatory success rate.
