With iOS 10, Apple has made the phone carrier less necessary than ever

· June 15, 2016 ·

Apple doesn't like carriers. It tolerates them because it has to, but year after year the company has committed to reducing the prevalence of the network providers in the its plans for the iPhone. For the first few years, Apple wasn't a semiconductor company, so it used minimally-changed components from Samsung and Qualcomm. Then, in 2010, it introduced the custom-designed A4; three years later, it introduced the world's first 64-bit mobile processor, the A7, a product so ahead of its time that Qualcomm pushed up its own plans for a 64-bit solution for Android users, with disastrous results . For Apple, carriers continue to be a necessary evil. Though Apple has managed to reduce its reliance on outside parties in the production, distribution and maintenance of the iPhone , without building its own infrastructure in every country in which it sells, working with the carriers continue to be a necessary evil. But disruption comes in waves, and with a … [Read more...] about With iOS 10, Apple has made the phone carrier less necessary than ever

Bangladeshi boat evades pirates

· March 8, 2021 ·

ZAMBOANGA CITY: A Bangladeshi bulk carrier, the Akij Pearl, escaped pirates who tried to board the cargo vessel while sailing off Sibutu Island in the province of Tawi-Tawi near the Malaysian border, reports said. The incident, which occurred on March 3, was only reported on Sunday by the ReCAAP Information Sharing Center, which immediately issued a warning and urged ship master and crew to exercise extra vigilance when transiting the waters off Eastern Sabah and in the Sulu-Celebes Seas, in particular waters off Sibutu Island. ReCAAP stands for Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia. “While the bulk carrier was underway, an unidentified speed boat with three perpetrators on board attempted to board the ship. The master reported the incident to the Philippine Navy Littoral Monitoring Station,” it said. The 190-meter cargo vessel, built in 2005 by the Mitsui Tamano Engineering and Shipbuilding in Japan, departed the port of … [Read more...] about Bangladeshi boat evades pirates

Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change

· January 8, 2021 ·

Solidarity between pro-democracy advocates has been gaining momentum across Asia in the last couple of months, both in cyberspace and in the streets. The informal Milk Tea Alliance unites like-minded political activists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Myanmar. Although their agendas at home vary, protesters clashing with riot police in Myanmar can relate to Thais demanding reform of the monarchy. Hong Kongers contesting Beijing’s National Security Law , meanwhile, can resonate with Taiwanese resisting Chinese mainland encroachment. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a professor of political science at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University, told DW that the growing transnational movement "has aligned the aspirations of young demographics across Asia, favoring democratic norms and values against authoritarianism in their countries and beyond." How did the Milk Tea Alliance come about? In recent months, young pro-democracy activists in Asia have shown how online activism can morph into … [Read more...] about Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change

Cellphone inventor says 5G should be focused on providing more access

· March 8, 2021 ·

When Apple or Samsung unveils a new smartphone, consumers can preorder the device within days and expect to get it in their hands within weeks. When Motorola introduced the first-ever cellphone, the DynaTAC, in 1973, it took another decade before consumers could actually use one. Talk about delayed gratification. Ironically, it took the team at Motorola just three months to conceive and build the first DynaTAC, a minor miracle considering it takes 12 to 18 months today to do the same thing with a flagship smartphone. The company only made two prototypes, the culmination of thousands of parts welded together in a boot-shaped phone with a massive antenna. "It's far more complicated than a modern phone, believe it or not," Martin Cooper, who led the team at Motorola and is credited as the father of the cellphone, said in an interview for the Daily Charge podcast last week. Cooper shared stories about the whirlwind race to develop that first phone, which was less a … [Read more...] about Cellphone inventor says 5G should be focused on providing more access
