Base Camp: 2021 Toyota Prius

· March 1, 2021 ·

Every week, wheels.ca selects a new vehicle on sale in Canada and takes a good look at its entry-level trim. If we find it worthy of your consideration, we’ll let you know. If not, we’ll recommend one that earns a passing grade. Few names in the automotive sphere are as recognized as Prius. The model showed up over twenty years ago, taking the competition to school in terms of providing a reliable yet fuel-efficient hybrid car. It’s gone through a few permutations since then — including a stint where it looked like an unfinished science project — and now takes a regular seat at the segment’s head table. For 2021, Toyota offers four different trims of Prius, including the base model shown here. It’s powered by a gasoline-fuelled 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Together, they make 121 horsepower while running on gas, electricity, or a combination of both depending on driving conditions. The transition between modes is smooth, by the way, and requires no … [Read more...] about Base Camp: 2021 Toyota Prius

‘Singaporean or Malaysian, they’re people’: How shelter volunteers rallied to help workers sleeping rough

· April 2, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Sam slumped in defeat on a bench near Kranji MRT station. The 43-year-old had come to Singapore on the eve of Malaysia’s Mar 18 lockdown, with the promise of a job at a vegetable wholesale centre in Woodlands and accommodation provided. Four days later, he was jobless – and without a roof. He couldn’t simply head back to his lodgings in Johor, nor return to his wife and two toddlers who lived eight hours away by car in Penang. The Malaysian claims he was made to work overtime without extra pay, and when he asked about his work permit, his boss shrugged him off. “He just said one thing - if you cannot, then don’t work.” That’s how Sam ended up at Kranji. “I really had no place to go because I don’t know anyone here. So I thought, just sit around until my next job interview,” he said. READ: PM Muhyiddin extends movement control order in Malaysia until Apr 14 Then, a few kind strangers approached him. Would he like a place to stay? asked the volunteers. For the … [Read more...] about ‘Singaporean or Malaysian, they’re people’: How shelter volunteers rallied to help workers sleeping rough

Fresh air, with frills

· March 1, 2021 ·

Beside a crackling bonfire under a starlit sky, listening to the orchestra of the cicadas and the gurgle of the forest stream, one couldn’t possibly want anything more from life. Except, perhaps, a hot tub, WiFi, and a soft bed with sweet smelling sheets, and not to mention soul-satisfying food. Luxury, even in the middle of a jungle, is not too much to ask for. The Triangle Glamping at Pune Glamorous camping — more popularly known as glamping — is catching on in India. After many months of lockdown, in a country that is still in the grip of a pandemic, restless travellers looking for a break from ‘Work from Home’ routine, household chores and crowded cities, are increasingly picking glamping over touristy places, says Akshay Kusmade, owner of The Triangle Glamping, a camping site 16 kilometres from Pune. “People are tired of being cooped up in their city homes and are longing to go out into forests and open spaces. Glamping is an option for them as they can have a … [Read more...] about Fresh air, with frills

SCDF reviewed processes after NSF’s suicide; coroner recommends appointing mental health experts

· November 20, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: A coroner found that an 18-year-old Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) full-time national serviceman who was found dead at the foot of a block in Clementi last year had committed suicide, and recommended that the force review its structure and protocols including appointing trained mental health professionals to each camp. In findings released on Wednesday (Nov 20), State Coroner Kamala Ponnampalam found that the death of Singaporean Muhammad Ahad Lone, who had returned to Singapore from Pakistan to complete his national service, was a deliberate act of suicide. He was found dead at the foot of Block 1A Pine Grove on Apr 7, 2018, dressed in SCDF trousers, with the cause of death certified as multiple injuries consistent with a fall from height. The coroner said the inquiry showed that "there are several dedicated commanders at SCDF's National Service Training Institute (NSTI), who regularly give up their personal time to interact with the recruits". She found … [Read more...] about SCDF reviewed processes after NSF’s suicide; coroner recommends appointing mental health experts

Travel a lot for work? Stay healthy, keep fit and eat well with these tips

· November 20, 2019 ·

For business travellers who often fly halfway around the world for work, dealing with jet lag, stress and fatigue is bad enough. But there’s also another hurdle they often have to overcome – eating healthy and keeping fit. “Sticking to regular routines on business trips can be challenging for various reasons, such as limited options or tight schedules," said Bindu Bhatia, Asia Pacific's managing director of CWT, a travel management platform. "You’re focused on your work and trying to make the most of your trip, so you don’t have time to search for a gym or affordable healthy eating options if they’re not easily accessible. You may be stuck having to eat whatever is available at the hotel restaurant." It's no better for those who make short trips around Southeast Asia, often flying back on the same day, said Bindu. This could mean having a very tight schedule that’s often at the expense of proper meals and sleep. And it seems Singaporean business travellers are the worst … [Read more...] about Travel a lot for work? Stay healthy, keep fit and eat well with these tips
