Amahl S. Azwar (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Bali ● Sat, July 24 2021 StarVision Plus’ A Perfect Fit falls short in its intention to promote female empowerment and ends up as yet another sugary love story that emphasizes style over substance. Then again, perhaps this is just the kind of “comfort food” that we all need right now. The 112-minute film follows the story of a young Balinese woman named Saski (Nadya Arina), who is engaged to Deni (Giorgino Abraham), an arrogant and domineering man but someone her family feels would make a perfect life partner. Then a chance encounter between Saski and a modest and handsome shoemaker named Rio (Refal Hady) turns her life upside down. Saski is torn between wanting to follow her heart and her desire to respect her family’s wishes as her culture dictates. Hollywood hasn't had a good summer. From Friday, August 25, to Sunday, August 27, the United States box office brought in only $65 million, the worst weekend since 2001. Labor Day weekend wasn't much better, netting just under $75 million. For the third weekend in a row, The Hitman's Bodyguard , a bland, poorly reviewed buddy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, made more money than any other film in theaters. The highest-profile releases last week were a remastered version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Tulip Fever , a Weinstein Co. period piece about a love affair and the tulip trade in 17th-century Amsterdam. Both brought in less than $2 million over the Labor Day … [Read more...] about Can ‘It’ rescue Hollywood from its disappointing summer?

Heart Evangelista (left) and Alexander Lee Since Pinoys are going gaga over K-dramas, GMA 7 came up with a bright idea via the Fil-Korean rom-com, “My Korean Jagiya.” Partly shot in South Korea’s scenic spots that are often used in famous K-dramas, the series is topbilled by Heart Evangelista-Escudero and Oppa Alexander Lee (former member of the K-pop group, U-Kiss). The charming series tells the story of a fangirl and her idol, which will make you believe in the magic of serendipity. Even if Heart is already married, her vibrant glow makes it seem like she’s still a high-school girl, so her team-up with the Korean heartthrob is swoonworthy, indeed. Here’s my chat with Heart: What’s your fave K-drama? “Full House,” so I’m happy I was able to do its remake. But, “My Korean Jagiya” tops everything else I like. What’s it like working with a Korean actor? It’s refreshing to work with someone who’s a star in Korea but doesn’t act like one. He’s humble and hardworking. What are … [Read more...] about Heart now ready to be a mom
The Hitman's Bodyguard , a poorly reviewed buddy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, led the U.S. box office over the weekend with a measly $10.1 million in earnings. Overall, Americans spent only $65 million in theaters in what was the slowest box office weekend since 2001. To put this paltry three-day stretch in perspective, Wonder Woman pulled in over $100 million by itself during its opening weekend back in June. ( James Cameron was not impressed. ) August is traditionally a slow month for Hollywood, but 2017 has been particularly brutal. Sure, more and more moviegoers are opting to stay home and stream, but Hollywood isn't helping itself by not producing anything remotely appealing. There were no significant theaterical releases last Friday—the primary reason for the low turnout—and there won't be again this Friday as Americans gear up for the symbolic last weekend of summer, which they aren't likely to want to spend inside a dark theater.
