South Africa variant confirmed in Slovakia

Font size: A - | A + 0 Slovak virologists found the South Africa coronavirus variant in seven samples from Friday, March 5. Virologist Boris Klempa from the Slovak Academy of Sciences sequenced the samples for the presence of the new mutation, also known as 501.V2 or B.1.351, in his lab. He confirmed the new strain was found in six samples for the Dennik N daily on Sunday. The Health Ministry later confirmed the new strain was found in seven samples . Three infections were confirmed in Bratislava, in two men who arrived from Ukraine and in on woman who contracted the virus in Slovakia. In the nothern district of Stará Ľubovňa, a man who returned from Germany tested positive for the South Africa strain. In the Dolný Kubín district, one man and one woman who have not travelled anywhere were confirmed as positive with the new strain. COVID-19 worsened gender inequalities in Africa: WHO

Video Player Close NAIROBI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 is exacerbating inequities associated with gender in several key spheres of life and development, Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) regional director for Africa said in a statement issued in Nairobi ahead of International Women's Day to be marked on March 8. WHO said that African women bore the brunt of income losses, social marginalization, and health risks that escalated at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the continent. Moeti pointed out that the pandemic's aftershocks had a disproportionate impact on women and girls in the continent amid the absence of a robust safety net to minimize their vulnerabilities. African women despite accounting for about 41 percent of COVID-19 cases suffered immensely from social and economic disruptions linked to the pandemic including violence, job losses, and poverty. UN appeals for $266-M aid for Africa

NAIROBI: Two United Nations agencies on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) appealed for 29.23 billion shillings (about $266 million) to end food ration cuts for more than 3 million refugees in Eastern Africa. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, and World Food Program (WFP) said funding shortages had forced cuts up to 60 percent and warned of growing risks, including increased malnutrition and anaemia as well as stunted child growth. “We have never had such a terrible funding situation for refugees. We have a $266-million shortfall for the next six months for refugees’ minimum needs,” said Michael Dunford, WFP Regional Director for Eastern Africa, in a joint statement issued in Nairobi. “We are deeply concerned that if cuts continue, they will be faced with a very difficult decision: stay in the camps where food and nutrition security is deteriorating or consider risking going back when it is unsafe,” he added. African Cardinal: Affirmative Action Is ‘Racial Discrimination’ Like Apartheid

South African Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier slammed preferential “Black Economic Empowerment” as “racial discrimination” Sunday, saying such favoritism smacks of apartheid. Cardinal Napier, the archbishop of Durban, wrote on Twitter that Affirmative Action, Black Economic Empowerment and even Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment are all forms of racial discrimination “on a par with apartheid policies” that also favored another group by race. The cardinal put his assertion in the form of a “Lenten Resolution”: to give up on trying to figure out how preferential treatment for blacks based on skin color can be anything other than discrimination.
