A trophy hunter is facing furious backlash for posing with the heart of a giraffe she had just shot – describing the bloody organ as her "perfect" Valentine’s Day present. Merelize Van Der Merwe, 32, infuriated Facebook users when she shared the gruesome image after her "wonderful" husband spent more than $2,000 to make her dream come true at a South African game park, the Mirror reported . "Ever wondered how big a giraffe’s heart is? I’m absolutely over the moon with my BIG valentine’s present," Van Der Merwe, who plans to use the beast’s skin as a rug, wrote on Facebook. The avid hunter, who incurred the wrath of animal rights activists, brushed off their complaints by insisting that killing the 17-year-old bull actually helps save threatened species, a claim refuted by conservationists. … [Read more...] about Merelize Van Der Merwe faces backlash for posing with heart of giraffe she killed

Snakes disembowel toads and feast on the living animal’s organs one by one

· September 29, 2020 ·

Pity the toads that encounter Asian kukri snakes in Thailand. These snakes use enlarged, knifelike teeth in their upper jaws to slash and disembowel toad prey, plunging their heads into the abdominal cavities and feasting on the organs one at a time while the toads are still alive, leaving the rest of the corpse untouched. While you're recovering from the horror of that sentence, "perhaps you'd be pleased to know that kukri snakes are, thankfully, harmless to humans," amateur herpetologist and naturalist Henrik Bringsøe, lead author in a new study describing the gruesome technique, said in a statement . This grisly dining habit was previously unknown in snakes ; while some rip chunks from their prey, most snakes gulp down their meals whole. Scientists had never before seen a snake Bury its head inside an animal's body to slurp up organs — sometimes taking hours to do so, Bringsøe and his colleagues reported. Alabama Man Almost Killed by Pack of Dogs in ‘Horrific’ Attack

· February 25, 2021 ·

An Alabama man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition this week after being mauled by a pack of dogs outside his home. Eric Roney, 33, suffered puncture wounds across his entire body during the attack on Monday morning in Chunchula, Mobile County. A family member has said he remains sedated and was placed on a ventilator. Roney will need surgeries including reconstructive procedures to his face and ears, but these cannot be carried out yet because his condition is not stable, his family told news outlet WALA. The victim's relatives said the man was set upon by at least five dogs during a "horrific" attack and sustained "hundreds" of wounds, according to WALA. It is believed the dogs were of mixed hound breeds. "There's hardly a place on his body that's not eaten," said Myland Johnson, the victim's grandfather. Johnson told WALA his son Donald had heard noises outside at about 2 a.m and initially thought the dogs had spotted a bear. But when he went to investigate, he … [Read more...] about Alabama Man Almost Killed by Pack of Dogs in ‘Horrific’ Attack

Capitol assault much bigger than intel suggested, U.S. Capitol Police chief says

· February 25, 2021 ·

WASHINGTON — The acting U.S. Capitol Police chief was pressed to explain Thursday why the agency hadn’t been prepared to fend off a violent mob of insurrectionists, including white supremacists, who were trying to halt the certification of the presidential election last month, even though officials had compelling advance intelligence. Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman denied that law enforcement failed to take seriously warnings of violence before the Jan. 6 insurrection. Three days before the riot, Capitol Police distributed an internal document warning that armed extremists were poised for violence and could attack Congress because they saw it as the last chance to try to overturn the election results, Pittman said. But the assault was much bigger than they expected, she said. “There was no such intelligence. Although we knew the likelihood for violence by extremists, no credible threat indicated that tens of thousands would attack the U.S. Capitol, nor did the intelligence … [Read more...] about Capitol assault much bigger than intel suggested, U.S. Capitol Police chief says
