Tall Blacks veteran Mika Vukona will be surrounded by rookies with coach Pero Cameron forced to name 10 debutants to play Australia due to complications arising from quarantine restrictions. Basketball New Zealand (BNZ) announced the team on Wednesday for Saturday night's clash in Cairns. It said: “Due to a combination of rearranging the fixture, quarantine restrictions and the lack of MIQ beds for New Zealand based players, and the uncertainty around the Australian NBL’s ever- changing schedule, Cameron was forced to narrow his selection to eligible players based in Australia’'. Vukona – the Tall Blacks’ second most capped player with 152 appearances - and two-test 18-year-old New Zealand Breakers’ University of Virginia guard Taine Murray are the only players in the 12-man squad to have previously played for the Tall Blacks. Black box of crashed Taiwan military chopper located
TAIPEI: The black box from a Taiwanese helicopter that crashed killing its military chief has been recovered, the defence ministry said on Friday (Jan 3). The island is in mourning after the Black Hawk carrying the chief of general staff Shen Yi-ming and seven senior officers smashed into the mountains near Taipei on Thursday, just days ahead of national elections. The general and his entourage were on a routine mission to visit soldiers in the northeast for the upcoming Chinese New Year. Investigators located the military helicopter's flight data recorder on Friday and it will be analysed to help determine the cause of the crash, the defence ministry said. Shen, 62, was the highest-ranking Taiwanese military official to die while on duty. Flags at all military units have been at half mast since Thursday. The UH-60M helicopter was carrying 13 people in total, with five surviving the crash. It disappeared from radar less than 15 minutes after taking off, and did not … [Read more...] about Black box of crashed Taiwan military chopper located
Fresh air, with frills
Beside a crackling bonfire under a starlit sky, listening to the orchestra of the cicadas and the gurgle of the forest stream, one couldn’t possibly want anything more from life. Except, perhaps, a hot tub, WiFi, and a soft bed with sweet smelling sheets, and not to mention soul-satisfying food. Luxury, even in the middle of a jungle, is not too much to ask for. The Triangle Glamping at Pune Glamorous camping — more popularly known as glamping — is catching on in India. After many months of lockdown, in a country that is still in the grip of a pandemic, restless travellers looking for a break from ‘Work from Home’ routine, household chores and crowded cities, are increasingly picking glamping over touristy places, says Akshay Kusmade, owner of The Triangle Glamping, a camping site 16 kilometres from Pune. “People are tired of being cooped up in their city homes and are longing to go out into forests and open spaces. Glamping is an option for them as they can have a … [Read more...] about Fresh air, with frills
Confessions of a ‘model minority’: How I’m learning to confront my own biases
Childhood for me was … busy. My parents, who immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong, rarely took time off work and spent their weekends chauffeuring my brother and me to our lessons. It was all they knew. In Asia’s cutthroat cities, many parents feel they have no choice but to spend a huge amount of their salaries to help their offspring stand out from the studious masses. We never went camping, or fishing, or whatever other Canadian families did for leisure. Our Saturday mornings consisted of three hours of Cantonese school. If one of us got a perfect score on our vocabulary test, we would get McDonald’s for lunch as a treat. After that, we’d head straight to two hours of piano lessons in a neighbouring Vancouver suburb. On Sunday mornings, we attended art class followed by tutoring in music theory, composition or music history. All those lessons were supposed to stimulate our growing brains. I always felt connected to Hong Kong as my birthplace and embraced its stereotypical … [Read more...] about Confessions of a ‘model minority’: How I’m learning to confront my own biases
Happier Camper Traveler Revealed: Larger, More Features, Still Modular
It sports a kitchenette and a bathroom. Happier Camper is expanding its lineup this year with its new Traveler trailer option. For the last several years, the company has been selling its HC1 – a travel trailer that emphasized a compact modular interior at the expense of some creature comforts. The new Traveler – the HCT – rectifies that by combining the modular interior of the HC1 with the larger footprint of the HCT, adding in several of those missing creature comforts. The new HCT is a 17-foot long trailer, four feet longer than the HC1. The extra space is used to offer campers everything one would need for an off-the-grid camping experience. The HCT features a complete bathroom that includes a shower, sink, fan, and dry-flush toilet. The longer trailer also allows Happier Camper to install a fully equipped kitchenette – a dual-burner stove, a sink, and a DC-powered drawer fridge.
