More than 4,000 dengue cases in Singapore since start of 2020 as virus strain re-emerges

· March 22, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: More than 4,000 dengue cases have been reported since the start of 2020 – about twice the number of cases seen within the same period a year ago. A key concern is the growing evidence of a sustained switch in the predominant dengue virus serotype, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a news release on Sunday (Mar 22). Dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) is the more predominant strain, but there has been an increase in dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV-3) cases lately. "NEA has seen an increase in DENV-3 cases over the past four months," the agency said. “The monthly proportion of DENV-3 cases in February was approximately 48 per cent, almost double the proportion of DENV-2 cases at 26 per cent." It said the rise in proportion of DENV-3 cases is of concern, "as we have not had dengue outbreaks driven by DENV-3 in Singapore for almost three decades". "This means that our population has lower immunity to DENV-3, and consequently a large proportion of our … [Read more...] about More than 4,000 dengue cases in Singapore since start of 2020 as virus strain re-emerges

Spike in dengue cases; numbers could climb due to increased circulation of new strain

· February 11, 2020 ·

SINGAPORE: Dengue cases have spiked over the past two weeks, with 400 cases reported last week, up from 371 cases in the week before that, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Tuesday (Feb 11). Another 63 cases were reported between Sunday and 3pm on Monday, said NEA in a notice uploaded on their website. As of Monday, there were 114 active dengue clusters, with large clusters located at Begonia Drive, Gangsa Road, Jalan Kembangan, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 and Jurong West Street 91. The number of weekly cases had been rising between mid-December to mid-January, peaking at 404 cases. It dropped to 309 the week of Jan 19, and has been increasing since. According to NEA, the increase in circulation of the dengue-3 serotype, the high Aedes aegypti mosquito population, and the current high number of dengue cases could cause the number of reported cases weekly to rise above current levels in 2020. In a news release in January, the agency had said that it detected the dengue-3 … [Read more...] about Spike in dengue cases; numbers could climb due to increased circulation of new strain

The Relation of Art and Cognition

· January 11, 2021 ·

Source: "Bust of Plato (Vatican Museum, Rome)" by Dudva/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 We continue this series of comments on aesthetic cognitivism with reflections by the philosopher Noël Carroll, author of Art in Three Dimensions , among other books. Aesthetic cognitivism refers to the philosophical claim that aesthetic engagement advances knowledge and enhances understanding. Is this claim true? How would we know? By Noël Carroll My area of expertise is the philosophy of art. Arguably my field began with the debate over the cognitive value of art. As Plato announced in his Republic , there is an ancient quarrel between poetry and philosophy (although some commentators suspect that actually Plato started the quarrel). Basically, Plato argued that art—aka poetry—could not function as a source of knowledge. Plato advanced several arguments on behalf of this conclusion, including the allegation that artists traded in appearances rather than reality and, moreover, … [Read more...] about The Relation of Art and Cognition
