She’s a film critic for the Los Angeles Times — “the white lady from the L.A. Times ,” in the parlance of the script — whose every action inspires teeth-gnashing anguish in John David Washington’s Malcolm. First, she praises his film at its premiere, but only compares him to other Black directors. Then she writes a positive review, but in terms he feels have more to do with signaling her own progressive politics than genuinely grappling with the work. EXCLUSIVE: Nicola Adams , the Olympic boxing champion and LGBT icon, will be the subject of feature documentary Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story. The project comes from Salon Pictures , the producers of the BAFTA nominated fashion doc McQueen , and director Helena Coan, whose credits include Audrey , about the screen icon. Salon’s Nick Taussig and Annabel Wigoder are producing with Laure Vaysse of Rep Productions ( Billie ). The movie is now in production and Film Constellation has boarded sales ahead of the European Film Market, with UK rights already having been snapped up. The film will chart Adams’ rise from the streets of Leeds to being a boxing champion as well as a notably rare LGBT sports figure. MONDAY UPDATE: With Sunday actuals tallied, Disney / Marvel ’s Avengers: Endgame has rocketed even higher than the record-smashing estimates we saw yesterday. Through Sunday, the Anthony and Joe Russo -helmed giant collected $866M at the international box office , topping the already colossal $859M projection. Although domestic numbers won’t be confirmed until midday Pacific time, they are on the upswing and help snap Endgame ’s global debut to $1.222B . With the updated figures, the 22nd MCU movie overtakes Iron Man 3 as the No. 17 film ever on the worldwide charts — after just five days in release. In China today, Endgame is estimated to have assembled another $18.2M ahead of a four-day extended break that begins Wednesday. This is not included in the totals above. 2ND SUNDAY UPDATE, writethru after 8:14AM post : With an estimated $2,188.7M global through Sunday, Disney / Marvel ’s Avengers: Endgame has sailed past Titanic to become the No. 2 movie ever worldwide. The same goes for overseas where Endgame is also now No. 2 with a running cume of $1.569B . That’s after grossing a further $282.2M at the international box office in the sophomore session. Both globally and offshore, Endgame is still led by only Avatar . We earlier noted that Endgame was on its way to passing $2B global through Saturday, becoming only the fifth movie ever to hit that lofty benchmark (and Disney’s third). The 22nd MCU pic is now the fastest ever to the milestone — in just 11 days. Avatar , the previous record holder, did it in 47. With the Sunday estimates, there is now about $459M separating Endgame from Avatar overseas and roughly $600M worldwide. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars , which are set to air April 25 live on ABC. The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention. This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.
