US deploys National Guard to contain COVID-19 ‘hot zone’ in New York suburb

WASHINGTON: The United States has deployed the National Guard for the first time during the novel coronavirus crisis to help contain the spread of the disease from an infection-hit suburb. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday (Mar 10) deployed National Guard troops to contain a COVID-19 "hot zone" in New Rochelle, a suburb in New York. A one-mile radius "containment zone" will be set up around New Rochelle, and all facilities in the zone that hold large gatherings, such as schools and temples, will be closed for two weeks beginning Thursday. Drunk bartender fined for inappropriately touching security guard, cursing at police

SINGAPORE: When a drunk bartender trespassing at a condominium was stopped by security guards, he touched one of them in the crotch and later hurled vulgarities at the police. For his drunken antics, British national Tertius Nicholas Richmond P Wharton, 28, was fined S$4,000 on Thursday (Mar 19). The court heard that Wharton was intoxicated and at an unidentified condominium on the night of Jul 29 last year. He told a security guard that he wanted to visit his friend at the condo, but when probed for the unit by another security officer, he gave two invalid numbers. The second security officer, 32-year-old Dennis Li, told Wharton that he would have to leave the premises if he did not provide a valid unit number. Armed ex-guard holds 30 people hostage in Manila shopping mall; 1 person shot

MANILA: A man was shot and about 30 people taken hostage on Monday (Mar 2) by a "disgruntled" former security guard at a shopping mall in a Manila, where heavily armed police and negotiators were trying to end the standoff peacefully. Workers and customers were evacuated from the V-Mall shopping centre in the Greenhills area of San Juan, Manila, after gunshots rang out and officers wielding assault rifles rushed to the scene. A SWAT team was seen entering the four-storey mall, which has more than 100 outlets. Shoppers were evacuated and a security cordon established around it. San Juan city mayor Francis Zamora said Archie Paray, a former security guard, was holding the hostages in an administrative office in the mall and had shot at least one person. Point guard James Akinjo, Arizona softball and baseball teams earn latest Daily Wildcat weekly awards

Two teams earned this week's " Daily Wildcat Team of the Week" award as both the Arizona baseball team and softball team put on a show. The Arizona baseball team pulled off an impressive four-game sweep over Southeastern Louisiana and ended the weekend in dominant fashion with a 14-2 win. Over the course of the four games, Arizona finished with a 28-19 run advantage and kept all four of the games out of extra innings. The third game of the series was the one that kept everyone on the edge of their seats as the Wildcats were down 3-0 heading into the seventh inning but pulled off a classic late-game rally with four runs of their own. After this four-game win streak, Arizona improved their overall record to 6-2. The Arizona softball team is currently on a 10-game win streak to start the season and has yet to lose a game.
