AstraZeneca to miss second-quarter EU vaccine supply target by half

· February 24, 2021 ·

AstraZeneca Plc has told the European Union it expects to deliver less than half the COVID-19 vaccines it was contracted to supply in the second quarter, an EU official told Reuters on Tuesday. Contacted by Reuters , AstraZeneca did not deny what the official said, but a statement late in the day said the company was striving to increase productivity to deliver the promised 180 million doses. The expected shortfall, which has not previously been reported, follows a big reduction in supplies in the first quarter and could hit the EU’s ability to meet its target of vaccinating 70% of adults by summer . The EU official, who is directly involved in talks with the Anglo-Swedish drug maker, said the company had told the bloc during internal meetings that it “would deliver less than 90 million doses in the second quarter.” AstraZeneca’s contract with the EU, which was leaked last week , showed the company had committed to delivering 180 million doses to the 27-nation bloc in … [Read more...] about AstraZeneca to miss second-quarter EU vaccine supply target by half

Record haul seized as cocaine worth €600m intercepted in Europe

· February 24, 2021 ·

More than 23 tons of cocaine with a street value of around €600m (£516m) has been seized as part of a record haul in Germany and Belgium. Customs officers in Hamburg described the find at the German port as the biggest quantity of cocaine ever seized in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The 16 tons of cocaine were found hidden in more than 1,700 cans of wall filler at the port in a search of five containers from Paraguay that had been flagged as suspicious in a risk analysis by customs authorities. Another seven tons of cocaine was seized in a container with blocks of wood which had arrived at the Belgian port of Antwerp from Panama. The authorities said the consignments had been destined for the Netherlands and together represented the biggest catch of cocaine ever headed for the country. Refugees and undocumented migrants must be vaccinated, NGOs warn

· January 24, 2021 ·

The European Commission adopted a recommendation for effective vaccine strategies and deployment back in October 2020. In it, refugees are cited as a priority group. There is no mention of undocumented migrants. Individual nations, however, are each responsible for developing their own vaccine strategies as well as defining and prioritizing groups for vaccination. Refugees and migrants a priority Refugees and undocumented migrants are some of the most marginalized people in Europe. They belong to categories defined by legal status. When asylum-seekers are applying for or are granted asylum on the grounds that they are fleeing war or persecution in their home countries, they have temporary residency rights as official refugees. Undocumented migrants, on the other hand — even those born in Europe who have inherited their status from their parents — are not recognized by the current asylum framework. One of the main reasons both these groups need to be prioritized in … [Read more...] about Refugees and undocumented migrants must be vaccinated, NGOs warn

· May 6, 2020 ·

Disney Plus ' subscriber base grew to 54.5 million members as of Monday, Disney said Tuesday, just shy of the six-month mark since the streaming video service launched. But even with cinemas shut down around the globe because of the coronavirus pandemic, Disney reiterated its plans to theatrically release its new movies rather than bringing more straight to streaming on Disney Plus . CEO Bob Chepak reiterated Mulan 's July 24 date to debut in theaters, the first on the slate, as well as the the planned theatrical release dates for other big-budget movies like Marvel 's Black Widow on Nov. 6 and Pixar 's Soul on Nov. 20. But Chepak hinted Disney could change its tune. "We very much believe in the value of the theatrical experience overall to launch blockbuster movies," he said. "But we also realize that, either because of changing and evolving consumer dynamics, or because of certain situations like COVID, we may have to make some changes to that overall strategy, … [Read more...] about Disney Plus hits 54.5M members but new movies will wait for theaters (for now)
