MALMO, Sweden — Swedish prosecutors dropped a rape investigation against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange Friday, but British authorities still intend to arrest him if he leaves the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Assange was accused of sexually assaulting two women during a visit to Sweden in 2010. The prosecutor issued an arrest warrant three months later, but Assange has managed to avoid detention by seeking refuge at the embassy. Assange, 45, refused to cooperate as he feared Sweden would extradite him to the U.S., where he could stand trial for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents. Prosecutor Marianne Ny said she’s exhausted all available options to further the case against Assange. “I’ve withdrawn the international arrest warrant to extradite him to Sweden, and I’ve decided to drop the investigation,” Ny said at a press conference Friday. Claes Borgström, the legal representative for the two alleged victims in the case, expressed his … [Read more...] about Sweden Drops Rape Investigation Against Julian Assange

6 countries reported COVID-19 in mink farms, say WHO
GENEVA: Denmark and the United States are among six countries that have reported new coronavirus cases linked to mink farms, the World Health Organization said. Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden are the other nations to have discovered SARS-CoV-2 in minks, WHO said in a statement. Denmark has imposed strict measures on the north of the country after warning that a mutation of the virus had jumped from minks to humans and infected 12 people. Copenhagen has warned the mutation could threaten the effectiveness of any future vaccine and has ordered the slaughter of all the estimated 15-17 million minks in the country. READ: Denmark defends COVID-19 measures after mink mutation Britain on Saturday (Nov 7) banned entry to all non-resident foreigners coming from Denmark after the mutation linked to mink farms was found in humans. Scientists say virus mutations are common and often harmless, and this one does not cause a more severe illness in humans. But Danish … [Read more...] about 6 countries reported COVID-19 in mink farms, say WHO
Syrian Refugees in Greece Feel Betrayed by the West
This article first appeared on the Atlantic Council site. Shahira, 57, from Deir Ezzor, knows that there's a widespread refugee fatigue: the numbers—over 1 million people fleeing by sea to Europe just in 2015—have overwhelmed Western countries and publics. She also knows painfully well that—despite the strong efforts of many—Europe's system is failing Syrians like her. Spend just a day in the Greece she's experienced and it is palpable that the current policies are disconnected from the realities on the ground. "Tell me," the matriarch asked me in April. "Are our voices being heard?" Shahira and her nine family members arrived wet and cold on Lesbos Island on March 19, 2016. It was supposed to be the start of the end, the matriarch told me a month later. First there was the danger of life under Bashar al-Assad, followed by the protests and hopes—and then the regional violence that engulfed the fight and turned Deir Ezzor into a battlefield. Next came the siege, the … [Read more...] about Syrian Refugees in Greece Feel Betrayed by the West
EU Faces Sharp Rise in Child Trafficking
Europe is facing a sharp spike in child trafficking, driven in part by the refugee crisis , with many children being sold into sex slavery and otherwise exploited. "We have children being sold, we have women who are trafficked because they are pregnant in order for someone to buy their baby and sell it to the illegal market," Myria Vassiliadou, the European anti-trafficking coordinator, told reporters in Brussels on Thursday, EUobserver reported. "Child trafficking is reported by Member States as one of the trends that is increasing most sharply in the EU," a European Commission report into the issue concludes. Denmark, Lithuania, Sweden and Slovakia have all said they have seen an increase in children being forced to commit crimes. "Although child trafficking is prevalent in situations unrelated to migration," the report continues, "the information received suggests that the phenomenon has been exacerbated by the ongoing migration and refugee crisis, with specific risks … [Read more...] about EU Faces Sharp Rise in Child Trafficking
A (markets) journal of the plague year
LONDON: Last December, the first infection with the new coronavirus was reported to the World Health Organization. Twelve months later, as the charts below show, global financial markets have been on a roller coaster like no other. JANUARY JITTERS The coronavirus wasn't even the first thing that spooked the markets this year. The tone was set when an escalation of an oil market turf war between Saudi Arabia and Russia sent oil prices crashing more than 5per cent on Jan 8. Just days later, though, China's stock markets began to fall as a cluster of more than 50 pneumonia cases in Wuhan city sparked a warning from the WHO that there could be a new SARS-like virus. Oil continued to fall as traders began worrying about a drop in Chinese demand, but other major markets were not seriously affected until mid-February, when it became clear the virus was rapidly spreading out of Asia. Cue carnage. From Feb. 20 to March 24, as Europe's big economies locked down, MSCI's 49-country … [Read more...] about A (markets) journal of the plague year
