Tenet’s lackluster showing at the U.S. box office obviously is not entirely Christopher Nolan’s fault, as only 65 - 75% of movie theaters are open at limited capacity in the U.S. with major markets like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco still closed due to the global pandemic. As we predicted, Tenet, with its budget of $200 million, has a long way to go before it hits the $400 million mark it needs to hit to break even. Although it’s struggling financially, Tenet is faring better than Disney’s live action Mulan which similarly boasts a $200 million budget to Tenet but has only grossed $37.6 million globally as the #BoycottMulan movement continues to grow in Asia. Unlike Warner Bros., Disney made the decision to skip the U.S. box office altogether, making Mulan available to rent on Disney+ streaming service for $30 dollars. It seems clear that it’s still a tough moment to release your $200 million film. You have to imagine Nolan and his execs at … [Read more...] about Rakes In $200 Million at the Global Box Office, Struggles Domestically
Despite, or perhaps before the local blackout on media reporting, communist party mouthpiece The Global Times published an op-ed titled “Attack on Mulan tragedy for American society” and called the backlash over Xinjiang “another manifestation of the extreme ideologies regarding China among U.S. public opinion.” It added, “The truth-seeking spirit of American public opinion has short-circuited on Xinjiang-related issues and the understanding of China. As a socialist country, China attaches great importance to people’s livelihood and has been providing preferential treatment to ethnic minorities for a long time. How can the country possibly carry out the so-called vicious crackdown on a specific ethnic group as Washington portrays?… Now, even a film company has to experience scrutiny, thanks to the above-mentioned labeling… This is depravity.” … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Now Eyeing China Bow In $20M-$25M Range After Soft Saturday – International Box Office
The film stars homegrown talent such as Jet Li, Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Liu Yifei, and is based on a Chinese folk story. But, it has been hit with low social scores (7.6 on Maoyan and 4.9 on Douban — the latter slightly up today). And, of course, given the movie released on Disney+ a week ago elsewhere, piracy is an issue. In the wake of several U.S. Senators and Congress reps calling out Disney’s cooperation with elements of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s security and propaganda authorities in the production of the film, there is also a reported blackout on local press covering the release. However, it is not clear how much the recent stirs outside China have affected the box office performance within the market. … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Moola Muted In China With $23.2M Opening – International Box Office
Korea for its part is keeping the momentum going, bowing crime drama Deliver Us From Evil to a fantastic $14.9M 5-day start, per Kobiz. It positively dominated the market which is robust in the wake of such new local titles as Peninsula and Steel Rain 2: Summit, reinforcing the strength of the Korean industry. Peninsula now has a $27M cume at home after four frames. The Train To Busan sequel opened in Canada via WellGo this session with 47 runs and a Friday-Saturday take of $83K; the weekend will likely land in the low $100K range as Anthony has noted. In IMAX, it added $22K from 24 screens there. … [Read more...] about ‘1917’ Leads China Weekend; Korea Has Yet Another Hit With ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ & ‘Greenland’ Makes Hay In France – International Box Office
