American Gauff can improve the world, says Navratilova

· July 3, 2020 ·

REUTERS: American tennis player Coco Gauff can improve the world, 18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova has said, lauding the teenage tennis prodigy for her role in the Black Lives Matter protests against racial injustice. Gauff, 16, released a video on social media protesting killings of African-Americans in the United States amid widespread outrage across the country following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man in police custody in Minneapolis. "She is just so poised on and off the court, she was really brought up with great qualities and it shows how she plays and it shows how she's active now politically," Navratilova told BBC Radio. "I smile so much when I see the reach she already has now, and she will have in the future. She's one of those people that can change the world for the better, and she seems to want to do that." The death of Floyd sparked worldwide protests against racism and calls for reforms of U.S. law enforcement. Last month, Gauff … [Read more...] about American Gauff can improve the world, says Navratilova

Rugby: Barrett’s shoulder passes Hurricanes front rower test

· July 3, 2020 ·

WELLINGTON: Wellington Hurricanes fullback Jordie Barrett rolled the dice by not having surgery on his injured shoulder but after being clattered by front rowers in training this week he knew he would be fine to start against the Waikato Chiefs on Sunday. Barrett hurt his shoulder smashing into a tackle bag after returning to training following the COVID-19 shutdown but has recovered enough to be named on Friday to start his first game in Super Rugby Aotearoa. "I had (prop) Ben May come down one channel and then Colesy (hooker Dane Coles) coming down the other channel next up at training two days ago," a laughing Barrett told reporters on Friday when asked if there were any doubts about returning. "I think that's a pass mark." Barrett said he had been presented with two options when the shoulder was assessed by specialists. "Surgery was weighed up but I have gone down the rehab side," he said. "There is an element of risk to it but it has been a month and I feel like I … [Read more...] about Rugby: Barrett’s shoulder passes Hurricanes front rower test

HSBC to invest further in China amid political strife over Hong Kong law

· July 3, 2020 ·

HONG KONG: HSBC Holdings Plc said on Friday it would make new investments in its wealth management and insurance operations in mainland China. The announcement comes at a time when the UK-headquartered bank is under fire from some shareholders and British lawmakers for its support for the new National Security Law in Hong Kong, its largest market, which critics say undermines freedoms in the city. HSBC will establish a financial technology company on the mainland, and its life insurance joint venture in China will hire new staff to provide non-branch based wealth management services to customers in Shanghai and Guangzhou, the Asia-focussed lender said in a statement. Many international financial institutions see opportunities in providing services to upper middle class and rich individuals in China and Asia more broadly. HSBC hopes to be the top wealth manager in Asia in the medium to long term, Greg Hingston, the bank's regional head of wealth and personal banking told … [Read more...] about HSBC to invest further in China amid political strife over Hong Kong law

Banks in EU to publish world’s first ‘green’ yardstick from next year

· March 1, 2021 ·

LONDON: Banks in the European Union would have to publish a groundbreaking "green asset ratio" (GAR) as a core measure of their climate-friendly business activities from next year, the EU's banking watchdog proposed on Monday. As the trend in sustainable investing gathers pace, regulators want investors to get more reliable information on a bank's exposures to climate change as storms and other weather events affect the value of their assets and liabilities. The European Banking Authority (EBA) said the ratio, put out to formal public consultation on Monday, will measure the amount of climate-friendly loans, advances and debt securities compared to total assets on a lender's balance sheet to reach a percent figure. "I believe it's the first time regulators are asking for a green asset ratio," said Piers Haben, EBA's director of banking, markets, innovation and consumers. "The numbers may well be single digit for banks at first and that's why context will be important. … [Read more...] about Banks in EU to publish world’s first ‘green’ yardstick from next year
