MELBOURNE: Atlassian Corp co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes has pledged to help fund an ambitious A$20 billion ($14 billion) project to supply solar power from northern Australia to Singapore by a subsea cable, an Australian newspaper reported on Wednesday (Sep 25). The plan unveiled earlier this year by Singapore firm Sun Cable is to build the world's largest solar farm in Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, which could export 3 gigawatts of power via a 3,800km cable to Singapore. This would provide one-fifth of Singapore's electricity needs. Cannon-Brookes did not specify how much of the "insane" project his family fund, Grok, planned to finance but said he was being joined by other Australian entrepreneurs and an announcement was likely before the end of the year. "I'm backing it, we're going to make it work, I'm going to build a wire," the Australian Financial Review (AFR) quoted Cannon-Brookes saying in an interview on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Action … [Read more...] about Australian billionaire to back US$14b solar power supply to Singapore: Report

Canadian court grants bail to CFO of China’s Huawei; Trump might intervene
VANCOUVER: A top executive of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies was granted bail by a Canadian court on Tuesday (Dec 12), 10 days after her arrest in Vancouver at the request of United States authorities sparked a diplomatic dispute. Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer and the daughter of its founder, faces US claims that she misled multinational banks about Iran-linked transactions , putting the banks at risk of violating US sanctions. In a court hearing in Vancouver, British Columbia, Justice William Ehrcke granted C$10 million (US$7.5 million) bail to Meng, who has been jailed since her arrest on Dec 1 . The courtroom erupted in applause when the decision was announced. Meng cried and hugged her lawyers. Meng, who later left in a black SUV, will be allowed to stay at a luxury home owned by her husband, Liu Xiaozong, in Vancouver. Australian attorney-general denies rape allegation
PERTH: Australia's attorney-general on Wednesday (Mar 3) outed himself as the unnamed Cabinet minister accused of raping a 16-year-old girl, denying the decades-old allegation and trying to draw a line under a crisis that has consumed the country's conservative government. After a week of speculation that has dominated Australian politics, 50-year-old Christian Porter - the government's top lawyer and a former prosecutor - tearfully denied wrongdoing, saying "the allegations never happened". Porter insisted he would not step down, but he said he would take leave to deal with the mental strain caused by the allegations. "I've discussed with the prime minister today that, after speaking with my own doctor, I'm going to take a short period of leave to assess and hopefully improve my own mental health," he said. Porter was forced to come forward after senior lawmakers last week received details of allegations that in 1988 Porter raped a then 16-year-old girl who committed suicide … [Read more...] about Australian attorney-general denies rape allegation
Australian court finds second man guilty of plotting to blow up airliner
SYDNEY: An Australian court has found a man guilty of planning to blow up an Etihad Airways flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi nearly two years ago with a bomb hidden in a meat grinder, a spokeswoman for the New South Wales Supreme Court said on Friday (Sep 20). Police had accused the man, Mahmoud Khayat, and his brother Khaled Khayat of planning two terrorist attacks: The bomb and a chemical gas attack on the flight to Abu Dhabi in July 2017. The bomb was hidden in the luggage of a third brother who was unaware that he was carrying it as he tried to check-in at the airport. The device however never made it past airport security when it was deemed too heavy and was taken out of his luggage. Khaled and Mahmoud Khayat were arrested weeks later after police raids in Sydney. Police had said that high-grade explosives used to make the bomb were flown from Turkey as part of a plot "inspired and directed" by the Islamic State. In May, Khaled was found guilty by the New South … [Read more...] about Australian court finds second man guilty of plotting to blow up airliner
Australian girl loses her toy monkey – and Queen Elizabeth returns it
A toy monkey accidentally left behind at Buckingham Palace by a five-year-old girl has returned home to Australia after enjoying royal treatment by palace staff and gaining a travelling companion: a toy corgi. Harriet, one of six toy monkeys from Woodside Kindergarten in Adelaide, was taken on holiday to Europe by Savannah Hart and her family when it was misplaced. Savannah's mother, Katie, realised Harriet was missing the next day but was unable to locate the toy monkey before they returned home to Australia. Staff members from Woodside Kindergarten took up the hunt and penned a letter to the Queen, politely asking her to search for the beloved monkey. They also added photos of Harriet's travels from across the world. "We put in lots of photos of Harriet's adventures around the world and all the children signed it and put it in an envelope and posted it off," said kindergarten teacher Robyn Herringer. Surprisingly the next week the Palace responded, saying that … [Read more...] about Australian girl loses her toy monkey – and Queen Elizabeth returns it
