Three things that could derail Boris Johnson’s timetable for easing lockdown

· February 24, 2021 ·

Boris Johnson has said he is "very optimistic" that England can finally return to normal life on June 21 under his four-step roadmap out of lockdown. However the Prime Minister warned that "nothing can be guaranteed", as the Government maintains a cautious approach to freeing Brits from the limits governing daily life. Plans to reopen schools and allow greater outdoor socialising in March, to reopen beer gardens, shops and salons in April, and to scrap most rules on social contact in May have offered hope to millions. However the PM has been clear that he will be governed by "data not dates" and the timetable could slip if the virus begins to spiral. Four tests must be met before England can move onto the next step of the roadmap, which include how the vaccine rollout is going and whether there are any new variants causing concern. The document states: "Around four weeks is required to see the impact of the previous step in the data and the Government has committed to … [Read more...] about Three things that could derail Boris Johnson’s timetable for easing lockdown

US FDA Says 3 Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Recipients Suffered Severe Side Effects

· February 24, 2021 ·

US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) experts said that three recipients of Johnson & Johnson's one-shot COVID-19 vaccine had suffered from "severe side effects" during the trial, Reuters reported, citing the agency's documents. One of these reported events was a "hypersensitivity reaction" - although not classified as anaphylaxis - and was registered two days following the inoculation and is likley to be linked to the J&J jab, the files allegedly say. But the agency argued that they were not alarmed by these occurrences and their analysis of the vaccine did not raise any particular safety concerns that would prevent emergency use authorisation. Overall, FDA staff said in papers submitted on Wednesday that the J&J shot had appeared "safe and effective in trials", potentially giving a green light for the vaccine to be used in the United States. © AFP 2021 / MLUNGIS MBELE A nurse awaits to receive a dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine against the … [Read more...] about US FDA Says 3 Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Recipients Suffered Severe Side Effects

Does the Covid-19 vaccine stop transmission?

· February 24, 2021 ·

How to understand the difference between vaccination to prevent covid-19 and shots to halt infection. The purpose of the Covid-19 vaccines is to prevent death and serious health complications that strain our overburdened health care system. All the vaccines authorized for emergency use do this, and their safety and effectiveness in clinical trials have surpassed expectations. But most people, quite understandably, want to know something more: Will being vaccinated stop the spread of Covid-19 so they can socialize outside their bubbles and dine indoors with abandon? Eventually, yes. Many scientists are reluctant to say with certainty that the vaccines prevent transmission of the virus from one person to another. This can be misinterpreted as an admission that the vaccines do not work. That’s not the case. The limited data available suggests the vaccines will at least partly reduce transmission, and the studies to determine this with more clarity are underway. There should be … [Read more...] about Does the Covid-19 vaccine stop transmission?
