GRETNA, La. (AP) — An auto body shop owner has been accused of kidnapping a man he believed stole tools from his business and then smashing the man’s hands with a hammer during a beating in his shop. Chad Baxter, 37, saw someone on surveillance video last month stealing $7,000 worth of tools from his shop, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Capt. Jason Rivarde told Baxter reported the burglary to the sheriff’s office, Rivarde said. He told authorities he recognized the man in the video as “Dorian”, who was hired for a day to clean up around his business. The sheriff’s office obtained an arrest warrant for Dorian Lewis, 39. Lewis later told authorities that Baxter spotted him Thursday at a store and forced him into a vehicle at gunpoint. The sheriff’s office says Baxter allegedly beat Lewis at the back of his auto shop. Baxter flagged down a passing deputy and presented the injured Lewis, Rivarde said. Lewis told investigators about the … [Read more...] about Auto shop owner accused of hammer attack on suspected thief

Sharpton, Brown’s Attorneys Criticize Ferguson Grand Jury, Prosecutor
FERGUSON, Mo. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Attorneys for Michael Brown’s family say the process that led to a white officer not being indicted in the fatal shooting of the unarmed, black 18-year-old was unfair and broken. Attorney Benjamin Crump said at a news conference Tuesday that attorneys objected to St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch’s decision to call a grand jury and not appoint a special prosecutor. Crump also said, “We could see what the outcome was going to be, and that is what occurred last night.”The decision by the nine white and three black grand jury members means that Officer Darren Wilson will not face any state criminal charges for killing Brown. Their decision was based on 70 hours of testimony from about 60 witnesses. Prenda’s John Steele: Accused of identity theft by his own mother-in-law
Every time it looks like the saga of copyright troll Prenda Law must be winding down, bizarre new events take place. The most recent chapter took place yesterday in a Minnesota courtroom, during a hearing called over allegedly forged signatures that Prenda used on its copyright assignments. John Steele, the lawyer widely considered to be one of the Prenda masterminds, took the stand and testified while his co-founder, Paul Hansmeier, asked him questions. That itself was remarkable, considering both Hansmeier and Steele pleaded the Fifth yesterday in a Los Angeles courtroom when they were asked to testify about some of the very same issues covered. Some key documents in the Prenda copyright business were signed by an Alan Cooper—but Cooper, Steele's former housekeeper, denies ever signing them. As for Mark Lutz, the only man who Steele and his comrades will admit actually owns Prenda shells like AF Holdings, he was still nowhere to be found. Steele actually told the judge … [Read more...] about Prenda’s John Steele: Accused of identity theft by his own mother-in-law
Polestar 1 first drive review: Grand touring with a compromise
With electrification sweeping across the industry, the battle to establish a foothold in sustainable mobility is fiercer than ever. The arena is already littered with the remains of ambitious, well-funded young companies that promised to “disrupt” the automotive landscape, and later learned the hard way that it’s an extraordinarily complex and costly endeavor to undertake. As we sat in a converted shipping container behind Volta Charging in San Francisco waiting for Polestar’s technical briefing to begin, that distinctive brand of hip upstart pageantry was hard to ignore, the trappings of which inherently invite some level of skepticism. But while this two-year-old company is here to debut their first model, their story actually goes back much further. “There are a lot of startups out there trying to establish new electric car companies,” Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath noted. “But we see ourselves in a very special position to innovate … [Read more...] about Polestar 1 first drive review: Grand touring with a compromise
