SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Monday (Jun 22) announced a new system that lets users share digital car keys with friends and family members via the company's iMessage system, which will work with BMW 5 Series vehicles. The system will work with iPhones running the current iOS 13 operating system so that owners can start using it when BMW vehicles arrive. Apple said more cars that work with the system will come to market next year. Apple also updated its mapping application with information about electric vehicle charging stations, working with BMW and Ford Motor to show stations compatible with the user's vehicle. SWITCH TO OWN CHIPS FROM INTEL Apple on Monday also said it will switch to its own chips for its Mac computers, saying the first machines will ship this year and ending a nearly 15-year reliance on Intel Corp to supply processors for its flagship laptops and desktop. Apple chief executive Tim Cook said it marked the beginning of a major new era for a product line … [Read more...] about Apple announces new CarKey system that allows users to unlock their cars with iPhones

Apple set to make a ‘big announcement’ today
We are just in the second week of the new year and it looks a big announcement is on the cards from Apple. Apple CEO Tim Cook gave an interview to CBS and its host Gayle King has revealed that Apple is set to make a big announcement. However, King specified that it’s not going to be a product. According to a report by 9to5Mac, King was quoted as saying about the interview with Cook, “This was an interview that was scheduled because they have a big announcement that they want to announce tomorrow,” said King. “It is not a new product.” However, King said that even if it’s not a new hardware “it’s very exciting”. What may be the ‘big’ Apple announcement Since it’s not a product — and Apple generally never launches one in January — it could be a part of services. Perhaps it could be Apple’s big privacy initiative that has become quite the talking point. The App Tracking Transparency feature requires all apps to seek permission from users before tracking them … [Read more...] about Apple set to make a ‘big announcement’ today
Apple supplier Foxconn, others hit as India holds up imports from China
NEW DELHI: India's additional scrutiny of imports from China has disrupted operations at plants owned by Apple supplier Foxconn in southern India, three sources told Reuters, and other foreign firms are also facing delays as tensions between the two countries build. Customs officers at Indian ports have held back shipments from China and sought additional clearances after deadly clashes at the disputed Himalayan border last month. The checks have been imposed without any formal order. While several companies such as Apple and Dell have been battling to free stuck shipments, hundreds of employees at Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn's two plants in the south had no major work to do this week as shipments were delayed, sources said. More than 150 Foxconn shipments - containing smartphone and electronic parts - were stuck at the port of Chennai, though some are being cleared slowly now, the first source said. The total number of parts in the shipments was not clear. … [Read more...] about Apple supplier Foxconn, others hit as India holds up imports from China
UK to use Google-Apple model for tracing app in U-turn – BBC
LONDON: The British government will abandon the centralised model of its coronavirus test-and-trace app and switch to one based on technology provided by Apple and Google, the BBC reported on Thursday. Apple and Google have been in talks with Britain about the technology, which uses a decentralised model. The head of the UK's programme said last month a centralised app can potentially give more insight into outbreaks of COVID-19, but offers less privacy than decentralised rivals. Apple and Google have barred authorities using their technology from collecting GPS location data or requiring users to enter personal data. The firms' model has attracted the interest of over 20 countries, though some of the restrictions they have imposed have frustrated governments as the world's top two smartphone makers undercut the technology's usefulness by prioritising user privacy. The current UK app is being tested on the Isle of Wight, off the southern coast of England. Ministers have … [Read more...] about UK to use Google-Apple model for tracing app in U-turn – BBC
Germany launches coronavirus app as EU eyes travel revival
BERLIN: Germany appealed to the public on Tuesday to download a new smartphone app to help break the chain of coronavirus infections, one of several such apps that European governments hope will revive travel and tourism safely. The Corona-Warn-App, now available for Apple and Android devices, uses Bluetooth short-range radio to measure close contacts between people and issues a warning should one of them later test positive for COVID-19. "This app isn't a cure-all. It's not a free pass. But it's an important additional tool for containing the pandemic," Health Minister Jens Spahn told a launch event. Germany joins Italy, Poland and Latvia in launching apps based on technology from Apple and Alphabet's Google that preserves privacy by logging Bluetooth contacts securely on devices. In news coinciding with the German launch, European Union members agreed technical standards for national apps to 'talk' to each other - a step towards making it possible to trace infections across … [Read more...] about Germany launches coronavirus app as EU eyes travel revival
