It's a classic good news/bad news situation for wanna-be city sanitation workers. The current civil service list is being extended, meaning it will not expire after the usual four-year limit. But - and here's the bad news - that's because the city has barely tapped into the list created back in February 2008. Only 202 new sanitation workers were hired from that list. And the city hasn't hired any sanitation workers at all in the past two years. In addition, union officials warned last week that there may not be enough workers on hand to handle a big snowstorm. Harry Nespoli, president of the Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association, said there are fewer than 5,800 sanitation workers at the ready as the department prepares for the winter months. That's the lowest number in at least 10 years - if not longer. Last year, there were 6,216 sanitation workers and in 2007 there were 6,657. The one exception to that trend was 2003, when several hundred workers were laid off, but … [Read more...] about City puts crunch on Sanitation Department, keeps hiring list open just a little bit longer
A little bit longer
DID you know that 2016 will be one full second longer than most years? It might sound strange, but this year we will see a ‘leap-second’ added on to the year – and it’s all to do with keeping the world’s clocks in sync with the Earth’s rotation. In the UK we will see an extra second added on to the very end of the year – on December 31 at 23:59.However, instead of just hitting 23:59:59 and rolling in to 2017, as usual, official clocks will hit 23:59:60 before turning over into the new year.Cool, right? As we mentioned above, timekeepers slip in leap seconds periodically to help keep our clocks in sync with the Earth’s rotation. This is added because it technically takes Earth a bit longer than 24 hours to complete a full rotation — 86,400.002 seconds rather than 86,400.So, in order to keep everything matched up with solar noon (when the sun is highest in the sky) a leap second gets added on every few years. And, it’s actually a … [Read more...] about What is a leap second and why will 2016 last that little bit longer than usual?

U.S. Donald Trump Russia investigation Rudy Giuliani President Donald Trump continues to be forgiving of Rudy Giuliani despite misstatements his personal lawyer has made on various occasions on matters that could affect the president’s fate in office. In an interview in the Oval Office with The New York Times on Thursday, Trump said of Giuliani, who is representing him in the Russia investigation: “He was wrong.” “Rudy has been wrong a little bit. But what has happened is this: I didn’t care,” Trump said. “That deal was not important. It was essentially a letter of intent or an option.” Trump was referring to a proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow, which his former longtime lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to lying about to Congress. Cohen initially said his talks on the project concluded in January 2016, before the Iowa caucuses that are considered the first presidential votes, but last November admitted that the … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Says Rudy Giuliani ‘Has Been Wrong a Little Bit’ About Moscow Tower But ‘I Didn’t Care’
Now Nottingham Forest can start planning for next season, Aitor Karanka might be tempted to mix up his team a little bit. But if it were me, I wouldn’t change too much. I’m not a big believer in rotation. For me, I think it can be disruptive and if Forest are starting to do some planning and preparation for next season, making lots of changes isn’t going to help. Everyone likes to see players being given a chance, but it can put pressure on you if you’re only coming in for one or two games. And it should also be about what people show in training as well, not just in matches. I’m sure the manager will be looking at that when he’s making up his mind about people’s futures. I’d definitely try to keep the defence the same – that back four has been doing well, so why change it? I’d still have Costel Pantilimon in goal, too. I know we haven’t seen Stefanos Kapino play yet, but it sounds like Pantilimon wants to come back to … [Read more...] about ‘Kapino may have to wait a bit longer, Pantilimon deserves to stay in goal’
