2 men in court for allegedly stealing car worth N2.5 million
Two men, Godwin Amuzie and Godspower Imafidon, who allegedly stole a Honda Accord car valued at N2.5 million on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court. Amuzie, 25, an artisan and Imafidon, 25, a security man, who both reside at Satellite Town, Lagos, are facing charges of conspiracy and stealing. They, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge. Ogu alleged that the defendants stole the car belonging to the Complainant, Mr. Ezema Anselem. He said that the complainant dropped the car for Amuzie to wash and when he returned to pick his car, the defendant had left with it. “He reported the case to the police and the defendants were arrested with the car,” Ogu said. By Dayo Johson The 37-year-old trigger happy police sergeant Idowu Omosuyi who murdered a truck driver at a Police checkpoint in Uso, Owo area of Ondo state has been ordered to be remanded at Olokuta Correctional Service by an Akure Chief Magistrate Court. The accused person shot the truck driver, Ade Saleh on his head with AK47 rifle, which led to his instant death. Omosuyi was charged before Magistrate Charity Adeyanju, on a one count charge of murder. The police prosecutor, inspector Goodluck Uloh said the accused committed the offence on December 2, 2019, at about 2pm, along Uso- Owo road while on official duty. Court slams N1m bail on estate agent over alleged fraudulent property sale
A 59-year-old man, Agbomabini Kolawole, who conspired with others and obtained N8 million under false pretences from a woman to sell a building to her was on Monday granted N1 million bail by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje-Afunwa granted the bail application and ordered that the defendant should produce two sureties as a condition for the bail. Sabine Parish judge rules Louisiana’s split-jury law unconstitutional, citing Advocate research; impact unclear
Less than a month before Louisiana voters weigh in on the future of the state’s unusual split-jury law, a Sabine Parish judge has issued a sweeping decision that declares the law was crafted with racist intent, continues to have a discriminatory impact today and thus violates the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.The ruling by 11th District Court Judge Stephen Beasley relied heavily on research by historians and legal scholars as well as an exhaustive analysis published this year by The Advocate of jury trials conducted across the state over a six-year period. The judge ruled that the newspaper's data provided "uncontroverted" proof that the state's split-verdict law has a disparate impact on both black defendants and black jurors. For the time being, Beasley's ruling invalidates split verdicts only in sleepy Sabine Parish, home to about 25,000 people.
