Denver agrees to pay $4.6 million settlement to family of inmate killed in 2015 by sheriff’s deputies

· November 1, 2017 ·

The family of Michael Marshall, an inmate killed by deputies in 2015 in Denver’s downtown jail, will receive $4.6 million from the city in an agreement that also includes policy changes in how Denver Sheriff Department deputies treat mentally ill inmates. The settlement was announced Wednesday, and City Council will be asked to approve the settlement Nov. 13. If approved, the city will have spent more than $19 million in the past three years to settle claims against its sheriff and police departments. The agreement ends a nearly two-year ordeal for the family of Marshall, a 50-year-old man who battled chronic psychotic episodes where he would hear voices — often those belonging to his late mother, Jesus and Elvis Presley. Marshall was arrested Nov. 7, 2015, on trespassing and disturbing-the-peace charges after creating a commotion at a Denver motel because he was looking for his Bible. His family did not know Marshall had been jailed on a $100 bond until he was hospitalized … [Read more...] about Denver agrees to pay $4.6 million settlement to family of inmate killed in 2015 by sheriff’s deputies

“I could hear my heart racing”: Ukrainian women referee recalls journey to the top

· March 5, 2021 ·

KYIV: Kateryna Monzul made history in 2016 when she became the first female referee in Ukraine to officiate a soccer match in the men's top division, a game between Chornomorets Odesa against Volyn Lutsk. "Despite the mental training, when I went out on the soccer pitch and watched the teams lining up, I could hear my heart racing. I was overwhelmed with emotions," recalls Monzul. That game was part of a journey for the 39-year-old that began with refereeing children's and youth championships and took her all the way to refereeing the Women's World Cup Final between the United States and Japan in 2015. Since then she became the first woman to referee Ukraine's domestic cup final last year and was named the best referee in the men's division by the Ukrainian Association of Football in an otherwise male field. Women referees at men's top flight soccer matches are rare. France's Stephanie Frappart became the first woman to referee a major UEFA competition final in 2019 and … [Read more...] about “I could hear my heart racing”: Ukrainian women referee recalls journey to the top

SDP to address Budget 2013 “shortcomings” in its own “Shadow Budget”

· February 26, 2013 ·

SINGAPORE: The opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) said it'll address the "shortcomings" of the government's Budget 2013 and propose a more efficient way of prioritising Singapore's expenditure estimates in its own "Shadow Budget". The party said on Tuesday that the measures in Budget 2013 have failed to address Singapore's long-term needs. It said while the Budget attempts to address systemic problems, it still falls short of addressing what Singapore really needs. The SDP welcomes Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam's effort to tackle the problem of income disparity through the Wage Credit Scheme (WCS). However, it felt that the WCS will not be an effective remedy if the root cause of the income gap is not addressed. The root cause, the SDP said, is the continued downward pressure on wages brought about by the importation of lower-wage foreign labour. The SDP welcomed the move to raise the foreign worker levy for 2014 and 2015 but urged the government to … [Read more...] about SDP to address Budget 2013 “shortcomings” in its own “Shadow Budget”
