SYDNEY: Australia is unlikely to reopen its border to international travellers until next year but will look to relax entry rules for students and other long-term visitors, Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said on Wednesday (Jun 17). Australia has been largely successful in containing the spread of the coronavirus, which it attributes to curbs on international travel and tough social distancing rules. Birmingham said a quarantine rule for returning citizens could be applied to international students and other visitors who plan to stay for a long period of time. Australian state reinstates restrictions after spike in COVID-19 cases
MELBOURNE: Australia's second most populous state announced on Saturday (Jun 20) it will reinstate tighter restrictions on home and public gatherings after logging a double-digit rise in COVID-19 cases for a fourth consecutive day. Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews chastised people for ignoring guidelines on social contact by engaging in behaviour such as kissing and hugging as he reimposed a limit of five people visiting households and 10 people at public gatherings. The restrictions, which come into force on Monday and will last until Jul 12, reverse a relaxation of the rules at the start of this month that had allowed for home and outdoor gatherings of up to 20 people. SYDNEY: Australia's two largest states will further ease COVID-19 restrictions at libraries, community centres and nightclubs, officials said on Sunday (Jun 14), despite recording increases in new infections. New South Wales (NSW), the most populous state, said that from Jul 1, a 50-person limit on indoor venues such as restaurants and churches would be scrapped, so long as the venues observed a one person per 4 sq m rule. Nightclubs and music festivals would also be allowed to operate from August if new cases remain low, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said. William Byron scored his first win of the season, collecting the victory Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Tyler Reddick finished second. Martin Truex Jr. finished third. Kyle Larson placed fourth, giving Hendrick Motorsports two of the top three finishers. Kevin Harvick was fifth. Byron led 102 of the 267 laps.
