Drive less, go veggie and work from home – how you could save the planet from climate change

Going green needs to become a “status symbol”, the UN has said, as it urged people to work from home more, drive less and go vegetarian to protect the planet from climate change . Behavioural changes including working from home , eating less meat and driving less could cut emissions by up to 70 per cent by 2050, a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found. Global emissions must peak within three years in order for the maximum 1.5C temperature rise enshrined in the Paris Agreement to be met, and the report said it is now “almost inevitable” that the limit will be overshot at least temporarily. Jim Skea, a professor at Imperial College London and co-chair of the report, warned: “It’s now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5C. Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, it will be impossible.” Emissions in the last decade were the highest they have ever been – but the growth rate has slowed, with a rise in renewable energy , reduced deforestation and better energy efficiency offering hope that warming can be slowed, the authors said.
