At long last, the Government has bitten the bullet. The BBC licence fee is on the way out, to be replaced by an as-yet-unclear new funding model. That’s the plan, anyway, and it’s long overdue. The important thing is that the BBC survives well into the 21st century, and that wasn’t ever going to be something it could do while operating under a 20th-century business model. Of course, people will carp and moan. People with vested interests in the status quo, such as the extravagantly remunerated Gary Lineker, who is paid more than £1 million a year. Reacting to the news this week, he tweeted: ‘The BBC is revered, respected and envied around the world.
