Mary Poppins was first released as a feature film in 1964, and is an American musical fantasy. Based on P. L. Travers’ book series Mary Poppins, and t he film was directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by Walt Disney, with songs written and composed by the Sherman Brothers. Combining live-action and animation, the family favourite stars Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Matthew Garber and Karen Dotrice. The film was shot entirely at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, using painted London background scenes. Mary Poppins was released on August 27 in 1964, soon becoming the highest-grossing film of 1964 and, at the time of its release, was Disney’s highest-grossing film ever. It received a total of 13 Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture.
