Two men with ties to organised crime in Malta have been charged with providing the bomb which killed crusading journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. Robert Agius and Jamie Vella, both 37, were charged on Wednesday 24 February and have pleaded not guilty and also deny involvement in the 2015 assassination of lawyer Carmel Chircop . Vella, who has tested positive for COVID-19, appeared in court in personal protective equipment. #malta Magistrate enters court to hear arraignment of Adrian and Robert Agius 'tal-Maksar' and Jamie Vella in connection with Carmel Chircop murder and for allegedly providing bomb that killed Daphne Caruana Galizia pic.twitter.com/YmGozaUYJK — MaltaToday (@maltatoday) February 24, 2021 The arrests came a day after one of the suspects, Vincent Muscat, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 15 years in jail in return for giving evidence for the prosecution. Last year the prime minister Joseph Muscat – no relation – was forced to resign after it emerged that his chief of staff, Keith Schembri, had been arrested in connection with a police investigation into money laundering from the sale of Maltese passports. Schembri denies wrongdoing.
