New variant raises concerns; vaccinations pick up pace Officials on Sunday said another coronavirus variant is spreading across California, including in the Bay Area, where it has been linked to large outbreaks including one at a Kaiser Permanente emergency room that sickened dozens and led to one death. Labeled L452R, it is different from the highly transmissible B117 variant found in Britain. Much remains unknown about it, including its prevalence and whether it will spread more rapidly than others. San Francisco and Santa Clara are among several counties statewide where it has been found. As they race to learn more, officials are urging Californians to stay home and double down on mask-wearing and other safety measures.
