As the country, and especially urban areas like the National Capital Region reels under threat of a winter spike in Covid-19 cases, the Centre and state governments are activating the government machinery to procure, store, transport and distribute potential vaccines to India’s 1.3 billion inhabitants.In Delhi and state capitals, meetings are being held at various levels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding virtual meetings with state Chief Ministers, like the one on Tuesday. He is also attending briefings by his seniormost bureaucrats from the Cabinet Secretariat and various ministries like Home, Finance, Health and others. Additionally, these central bureaucrats are also in constant touch with their state counterparts.The government is also planning regulatory changes to quicken the procedure of transporting vaccines for Covid-19 from and into the country. It is considering setting up air freight stations (AFS) to enable direct movement of vaccines from pharmaceutical factories to the aircraft.
