‘PM Abe says a strong India is beneficial for Japan … security and strategic relations are rapidly catching up’

When he assumed office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Japan his first bilateral visit outside South Asia. Now into the last year of his term, Modi is headed back to Tokyo in end-October. Kenji Hiramatsu, Japan’s ambassador to India, sat down with Indrani Bagchi to talk about how relations have transformed: What are your expectations of this summit? I think it will be another successful visit. We had a very good summit and discussions last September. As you know, PM Abe was re-elected president of the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) just a few days ago. He has another three years as head of the ruling party. PM Abe says a strong India is beneficial for Japan, just like a strong Japan is in India’s interest. He is putting a lot of emphasis on the Japan-India relationship.
