Bupa suffers massive data breach exposing personal details of over 100,000 health insurance customers

Bupa has suffered a major data breach, putting the personal information of thousands of private healthcare customers as risk. An employee in Bupa’s international health insurance division (Bupa Global) has reportedly copied and removed around 108,000 international health insurance policies from the company’s internal computer system. The data taken includes names, dates of birth, nationalities, and some contact and administrative details including Bupa insurance membership numbers. No financial or medical data was taken, according to Bupa. The breach affects some customers with international private health insurance – those with a policy number that begins “BI”. Domestic health insurance customers are not affected. Bupa is in the process of contacting affected customers to warn them to be wary of scammers who may have got hold of their details.
