Overseas Vietnamese gather for Lunar New Year By Thu Nguyet in HCMC and Thoa Nguyen in Hanoi More than 500 overseas Vietnamese from more than 21 countries and territories gathered in a New Year greeting in HCMC last week. In the first ten months of last year, 307 overseas Vietnamese entrepreneurs were granted business licenses by the Government with total registered capital of US$389 million. As of October last year, 2,327 overseas Vietnamese had been granted business licenses with capital of US$1.6 billion. Overseas remittance stood at US$6.8 billion last year, a drop of 13% year-on-year. About four million overseas Vietnamese, half of them from HCMC, are living in 101 countries and territories. *Also, about 1,500 overseas Vietnamese from around the world gathered at Thien Duong Bao Son Park in Hanoi on Saturday to join the Tet holiday celebrations. The program features calligraphy displays, a proclamation of national hero Nguyen Trai, fine arts, traditional food and flowers and ornamental plant displays. The participants celebrated an incense offering ceremony to commemorate the forefathers and a carp fish releasing ritual to practice the traditional custom before Tet. There were also folk games, antique collections such as the Dong Son drum collection of Bui Ta Son and the red ceramics collection of Nguyen Dang Vong, poems of Uncle Ho and Vietnamese singers.
