NEW DELHI: Frenetic construction in the capital is daily throwing up 4,000 tonnes of demolition waste. Commonly called malba, improper disposal of this waste is choking roads, clogging storm water drains and polluting the Yamuna river bed. The Delhi government has now set up a committee to ponder ways of recycling and using construction waste. The committee must submit its report by the month-end. The nine-member committee, chaired by engineer-in-chief (projects), PWD, has on board representatives from the municipal corporations, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, DDA and Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation. The committee has been given the mandate to “look into the technical and quality features of recycled products made-whether these products conform to the strength and load bearing needs of construction and infrastructure”. A major part of the waste gets dumped in low-lying public land, along roads, Ridge or the river bed, giving rise to civic and environmental problems. “Apart from occupying precious urban land, drains are choked which leads to flooding,” an official said.
