Tony Dungy was always more than a football coach. At least that’s what the football media told us. He has been portrayed as thoughtful, cerebral and pious. Not exactly the type central casting would send over to a producer in search of an NFL pregame show analyst. That role now requires someone who wears colorful socks and shoots his mouth off without regard for the consequences. A loud, fearless voice who knows the game and is willing to criticize those who play it. Having a sense of humor doesn’t hurt either. NBC Sports got none of that stuff from Dungy when it hired him as one of its featured “Football Night In America” studio analysts in 2009. The Peacock brass went in another direction, believing Dungy’s reputation and resume, which includes the distinction of being the first black head coach to win a Super Bowl, along with his professor-like persona, would resonate with viewers.
