1. ASEAN leaders involved in various activities
Leaders of ASEAN member countries to the 22nd ASEAN Summit in Brunei took part in various activities on the fringes of the event on April 25.
The leaders of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines met in the 9th Summit of Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), during which they reiterated the importance of establishing BIMP-EAGA as a destination for ecotourism and food centre.
They also underscored the urgency of spurring economic development and narrowing the development gap among BIMP-EAGA members.
It was reported at the summit that BIMP-EAGA trade rocketed from US$100 billion in 2009 to US$170 billion in 2011, and foreign investment pumped into the area jumped from US$24 billion to US$55 billion.
The leaders and representatives of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand attended the seventh summit of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).
They signed an agreement on the establishment of the Centre for IMT-GT Subregional Cooperation (CIMT), which will be headquartered in Malaysia and tasked to strengthen the three member countries’ specific commitments to co-operation in outlining IMT-GT projects and programmes.

2. Celebration marks liberation of Truong Sa Islands
Nhan Dan Online – A celebration on Truong Sa Dong island of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago to mark the 38th anniversary since the liberation of the islands in 1975 was held on April 22.
The festivities were attended by Rear Admiral Nguyen Van Ninh, deputy commander-in-chief of the Vietnamese Navy, soldiers and residents of Truong Sa Dong Island.
Speaking at the event, Captain Nguyen Viet Thuan, deputy commander of Brigade 146, quoted General Le Duc Anh as having said at the 33th anniversary of the Vietnamese People’s Navy in 1988 that “we swear to our ancestors and compatriots that we are absolutely determined to defend Truong Sa, an integral part of Vietnamese territories.”
On this occasion, Khanh Hoa province, which administers the Truong Sa Islands, awarded certificates of merit to those honoured for having made significant contributions to the development and protection of Truong Sa Dong Island.
Earlier on April 21 a primary school was inaugurated on Truong Sa Lon Island to provide education for children on the island.
On the same day, a ceremony was held at the Truong Sa Lon Temple to unveil a jade Buddha statue, a gift of Buddhists from northern Vinh Phuc province.
In April 1975, the Vietnamese Navy dispatched three naval ships to the Truong Sa archipelago in an operation to liberate the islands from the occupation of the Saigon regime.
Son Ca was the first island to be liberated on April 25 and the entire Truong Sa Islands were completely liberated within the following four days.
3. 270 businesses attend Vietbuild 2013
As many as 270 businesses (including 45 foreign companies) are taking part in the Vietbuild Da Nang 2013 International Exhibition, which opened at the International Exhibition and Fair Centre in the central city of Da Nang on April 24.
Products displayed in 500 booths include building materials, interior designs, electrical equipment, glass products, paints and construction technologies.
Within the exhibition’s framework, the organising board will hold trade conferences, themed workshops for businesses and a forum to help them understand consumer tastes and build strategies. Awards will be presented to companies with the most impressive displays at the event.
The 4-day exhibition is co-organised by the Information Centre under the Ministry of Construction, Vietbuild Construction International Exhibition Organisation Corporation, Da Nang Trade Promotion Information Centre, and Da Nang Trade Fair and Exhibition Management Company.(VNA)
4. Vietnam attracts over US$8 billion of FDI in four months
Nhan Dan Online – Over US$8.2 billion of foreign direct investment (FDI) has been poured into Vietnam during in the first four months of this year, a 17% year-on-year increase, reported the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
As of April 20, 341 new projects with a total registered capital of nearly US$4.9 billion had been granted investment licences, an increase of 14.6% compared to the same period in 2012. In addition, 121 projects added US$3.34 billion to their registration capital, a rise of 20.7% against the same period last year.
Roughly US$3.75 billion in FDI was disbursed during the four months, up 3.9% compared to the same time last year.
Foreign investors from 37 countries and territories have put money into 18 different sectors with the focus on processing and manufacturing, which account for over 90% of total invested capital.
Japan remains Vietnam’s biggest foreign investor with total newly granted and additional capital of over US$3.6 billion, equaling over 44% of the total capital invested in the country, followed by Singapore and Russia, with 28.4% and 12.4%, respectively.
5. Food and Hotel Vietnam 2013 attracts nearly 440 businesses
Nhan Dan Online – An international exhibition entitled Food and Hotel Vietnam 2013 opened on April 24 in Ho Chi Minh City with the participation of 434 businesses from 35 countries and territories.
This year’s fair has recorded a 63% increase in the number of participating businesses compared to the previous exhibition and the highest in the history of the event.
Nineteen groups of pavilions from 14 countries and territories are being showcased on an area of 8,800 square metres. In particular, a most impressive pavilion of the European Union is making its maiden debut, with the aim of introducing European taste and geographical indications to participating cuisine experts and producers.
The three day event will provide participants with opportunities to connect and learn from leading experts in the field.
The biennial exhibition was first organised in 2004 and considered as a leading commercial event in the Vietnam food and hotel sectors.
6. 2013 Music Dedication Awards presented
Nhan Dan – The 2013 Music Dedication Awards were presented during a ceremony at the Hoa Binh theatre, Ho Chi Minh City, on April 24.
The awards, chosen by 100 art and culture reporters and journalists from across the country, were given for the year’s best song, album, music programme and composer, as well as best new artist and singer.
‘Chiec Khan Pieu’ (Pieu Scarf), composed by Doan Nho over 50 years ago and performed by Tung Duong, won the ‘Best Song’ title. The song, which features the beauty of the Thai ethnic minority traditional scarf, also earned the ‘Song of the Year’ title at the Favourite Songs programme in 2012.
‘In the Spotlight’, produced by the My Thanh company, other major competitors, including the Luala Fall Winter and Rock Storm Concert, to win ‘Programme of the Year’.
‘Classic Meets Chillout’ by young singer Pham Thu Ha, received the Album of the Year award, while composer Quoc Trung took home the ‘Songwriter of the Year’ prize.
Pop star My Tam, the first and only Vietnamese performer to receive the Best Asian Artist title at the Mnet Asian Music Awards last year, was named ‘Singer of the Year’.
‘Best New Artist’ went to 17-year-old Huong Tram – the Nghe An-based winner of the Voice of Viet Nam first season.
The annual Music Dedication Awards are organised by the Vietnam News Agency Sports and Culture Newspaper and the Cat Tien Sa Event Company, to honour the contributions and achievements of Vietnamese artists over the year.
7. Confederation of Agriculture and Rural Development established
Nhan Dan Online – A congress to inaugurate the Vietnam Confederation of Agriculture and Rural Development took place in Hanoi on April 24.
According to former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ho Xuan Hung, who has been the lead proponent of the confederation’s establishment, the organisation aims at connecting relevant organisations and associations and promoting the construction of modern agriculture and rural areas while being a social feedback channel to support and ensure farmers’ interests.
Forty-one groups and 116 individuals have currently registered as members of the organisation.
At the gathering, 43 members were elected to the Confederation Standing Committee and Mr. Ho Xuan Hung was elected President.
8. Vietnam wins six golds in regional karate tournament
Nhan Dan Online – The Vietnam team has won six gold medals and has taken overall third place at the 2nd Southeast Asian Karatedo Championships, which were held in Pampanga from April 18-21.
The Vietnam team of 32 karate martial artists brought home a total of six gold, seven silver, and 12 bronze medals. Malaysia topped the medal tally with 11 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals followed by Indonesia with nine gold, five silver and ten bronze medals.
The annual competition brought together roughly 200 karate martial artists from nine countries across the region including Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar and hosts Philippines.
