National Health Care Decisions Day has the wrong goal. The brainchild of a coalition of health care and end-of-life organizations, they want to focus national attention on having Advance Directives. So far so good. Their goal is to encourage everyone to take a day and have ‘The Talk’ with your loved ones about your end-of-life preferences and name a Health Care Power of Attorney. Here are 7 reasons why our own thought processes make that a bad idea.1. “Ok. Let’s talk, sign the forms and be on our way.”Many hospitals will have a table set up with the advance directive forms in the lobby and will be encouraging people to sign them on the way in. The problem? This will only reinforce the idea that these important decisions can be accomplished in one shot.
